Scranton, PA update

Please see below ... anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated!

Team Lowcountry -

Hey there. Just wanted to check in with you and run something by you that you're free to pass along to the rest of our Charleston folks. I'm currently the Regional Field Director in Scranton, PA. It's tough. Actually, it's the toughest area in PA by far and one of the toughest areas in the country we've tackled yet. Racism here trumps anything I've seen in the south ever...in my lifetime or working for the campaign - in SC, AL, or TX combined. We've been called "N-lovers," Obama's been called the "Anti-Christ," our signs have been burned in the streets during a parade, our volunteers have been harassed physically, or with racial slurs - it's been unreal. I have an amazing team, and this experience has only brought out a fight that we've never felt - it's reminded us why we'll sacrifice anything for this campaign and for our candidate, and it has made us see up close a nd personal the prejudices that still exist so blatantly, so clearly, in our own party and in our own country that I thought had come such a long way after our amazing victory in South Carolina.

Many of our volunteers have been intimidated. We don't have a lot of friends in this town. Jeremy Bird told me on Day One that this would be a different beast and he wasn't kidding - I suppose I should take it as a compliment that they thought I could not only be the field director for this region, but could successfully pull out 35-45% of the vote here to stand our ground while other areas bring it home (Philly for example). Building any sort of solid foundation in this area has proven to be a challenge, and while we have some great, dedicated volunteers - I'd like to ask you guys for some help. We're in the "Persuasion" phase of the campaign and if there is anyone who can persuade a fellow Dem - it's you guys.

I'd like you to help us by using our online neighborhood calling tool for my area (not the basic one found on the main website). If you or any of our comrades have the time or the unlimited long distance - please REPLY to this e-mail so I can give you the website link, and a local address of an area in need of help that you can adopt when you create an account. The script and codes are built-in (you'll see what I mean).

More than anything - this experience has made me realize how special what we had in SC was and how hard it is to capture anywhere else. I miss you all and hope to see you soon after we win this thing.

How is this "online neighborhood calling tool" different from the one many of us have used that's on the Obama campaign website?

I believe that team "South Carolina" online neighborhood calling tool was more targeted and specific than the one on the website.

I am about to post calling instructions from another email I received late last night.

If we're talking about http://pateams.barackobama.com/ , it's the one I've been using here in PA over the past several days. It's very user-friendly. I'm noticing Mark Ungemach's suggestion that we should leave a message on answering machines, which isn't what all of us are being asked to do. I have mixed feelings about the messages, especially if someone ends up getting several over the course of a few days, as we're then asked not to record that fact at http://pateams.barackobama.com/

As you said, I think the answering machine issue varies a bit.

I think the issue with not recording the message stems from problems we faced in Texas. People were recording that messages were left, and somehow it ended up being recorded as a completed call. This led to some confusion and frustration.

I hope your calls are going well ... I have yet to personally deal with any outright hostilities.

I've been calling Pittsburgh area voters who are registered Democrats with no extreme hostilty from anyone. The worst was something like, "My husband and I wouldn't vote for Obama if he was the last man on earth!" I'm assuming that people being called around Scranton are also registered Democrats.

Yes, registered Dems in Scranton.

I think what has been most surprising to me is the number of people who are still convinced that he is a Muslim. It is pretty interesting.
